Make Up For Ever Foundation Grail or Fail

have you heard of Make Up For Ever? many people haven't. it is not a brand used by most, but it is definitely used by the best. i first heard of Make Up For Ever through other makeup artists. they kept raving and raving about it's qualities. now having owned it for several months, i figured i would give you my review.

before i say anything, not everyone needs to wear foundation. some people are blessed with beautifully even skin. especially if you are under the age of 18, foundation can be a bit overkill. for those of us who like the look of flawless skin but weren't naturally born with it, this is the worth the investment.

at $40 a bottle it's a steep price to pay. because it works so well in photographs i invest the money. i use it sparingly because of the cost, and most often i stick to my drugstore brand foundations for daily wear. but when i really want the best coverage and color, i reach for my Make Up For Ever.

this foundation is silky smooth. the coverage is thick, but not too heavy. it leaves your skin looking beautiful without the caked on look foundation can sometimes have. there is a color for every skin tone. the reflective properties of this foundation are phenominal and that is why it is used in photography. my only complaint about this product is the price. beyond that, it is at the top of my Grail list.

if you are in the market for a higher end foundation, this is definitely worth a try. let me know what you think.

Brown and Black. Fashion Do or Don't?

a recent conversation with a friend sparked this idea. how many of you were raised with the belief that brown and black DO NOT match? if you have a black shirt don't even dare to wear a brown belt. and those black shoes should NEVER be paired with your favorite brown skirt. or how about grey and brown? don't even go there.

these days the rules in fashion and makeup are much more blurry. in fact, you pretty much make your own rules. this means, pull out those brown boots and pair them with your favorite black cardigan. it looks adorable.

according to fashion magazines, black and brown do match, and look quite sophisticated. have you ever wondered why in every smokey eye makeup kit they include brown? brown is inevitably included because it helps to warm up the look and eases the transition between black and white. same concept applies in clothing. brown helps warm up the look and this is especially appropriate for fall.

so go through you closets and reconsider your clothing. could you wear that brown cardigan with your grey shirt? you might find some new outfits you never considered. one thing to avoid, this look right here:

Recent Projects

here's a look at recent photo shoots Kellie and I have worked on together. the first is the incredibly cool Anthony. we had a lot of fun on this shoot and he was so photogenic.

next up we had a senior shoot. working with this young woman was too easy because she was so beautiful. we had a great time walking the Short North and modeling it up.

of course i had to include one shot of self promotion. i love my job.

Zebra'zzz

today's tutorial is thanks to YouTube user 53lovinit1. she has a variety of nail tutorials and i was so excited to have stumbled upon them. if you've seen me recently you probably noticed i am doing a variation of this technique using OPI Glitzerland for the base and black for the stripes. definitely a fun play on fall colors and trends.

go ahead and give it a try. i've had a lot of fun experimenting.

Drugstore Product Grail or Fail

this week's grail or fail is all about drugstore eyeliner. if you watch my videos you know i am a HUGE fan of Rimmel pencil eyeliner. inexpensive eyeliner will often have better staying power, heavy pigment, and did i mention the cost?

i have owned this eyeliner for several years now. i mainly use it for lining the water line of my eyes and occasionally i'll use it as a traditional eyeliner (i typically prefer liquid liner for my lids). this product is a definite Grail. pick one up for yourself at any Target, Walmart, CVS or Walgreens.

however, let me warn you, not all drugstore eyeliners are created equal. i found this Wet n' Wild eyeliner and thought it would give it a try.

this eyeliner was a fail for me. i was intrigued by the free brush and the fact that it came in a pot. that's about all i found this to offer. the application was not smooth and the color actually stained. call me crazy but anything that stains my eyelids makes me a little uncomfortable.

hope this helps.

Think Onion, Fall Fashion Concept

while dressing yourself don't be afraid to layer your clothes. what often sets fashion magazines apart with their styling is the ability to layer clothes in a way that is not only flattering, but innovative. while layering can be done year round, autumn and winter fashions really rely on them.

Target's Fall Premiere provides some excellent examples of this. check out the amount of clothing the women are wearing; shirt, dress, cardigan, and belt.

above are photos from JCrews Fall 2010 look book. notice the amount of layers used and the dimension it creates.

your assignment, if you choose to accept, is to head to your closets and pull out your own ensemble of layers. be creative, be innovative, and take a bit of a risk. while keeping it simple is easy and often chic, leave your comfort zone for a minute and try something new. think onion.

HELP! S.O.S.! I'm Desperate

you know it's been one of those days where you wake up in the morning and you get the kids fed, bathed, and clothed and you are in the shower before 8:30 a.m. patting yourself on the back.  as you begin to ponder what you could possibly accomplish today because you are WAY ahead of the game you notice your 22 month old walking into the bathroom holding a jar of Vaseline.

that can't possibly be good.

notice how great her eyelashes look with Vaseline on them. gorgeous.
and then you realize she has emptied the entire contents of the jar into her hair (she has obviously been watching mom get ready one too many times).

three baths and 7 washes later, it's still greasy.  WHAT DO I DO???

please. i'm desperate.

Blushing Basics How to Apply Blush

No Time For Makeup?

this tip is especially relevant for me since i have experienced it several days in a row. we've had a sick child around the Blushing Basics house and as most of you know, sick children = little time for mom.

i called my doctor on Friday at their opening time 8:30 am. they asked me to be in at 9:20. sounds like a lot of time but when you factor in driving (20 min), bathing the kids and dressing them (20 min on a good day), bathing myself and dressing (disclosing the actual time might be a bit embarrassing), this left me approximately 2 min. to apply my makeup and do my hair. {to avoid sounding lazy for having NONE of this accomplished before 8:30? two words, sick kid}

so what do you do when you are crunched for time? here's my routine:

10 seconds: shake out wet hair and run fingers through it.
20 seconds: apply gel and scrunch hair a bit.
15 seconds: apply liquid foundation, focus mainly on eyelids, undereye circles and Tzone
5 seconds: apply loose powder over entire face
10 seconds: apply blush and bronzer
30 seconds: apply mascara
10 seconds: apply lipgloss
remaining seconds: scrunch hair one last time and go!!!

focus on the basics. for me that includes making skin tone even, giving my pale cheeks some color, and having eyelashes.

come up with your own game plan for getting out the door in minutes. that way, when the time comes where you are racing the clock, you'll look like a million bucks.

L'Oreal Paris, The Real Deal

while i have been a fan of using drugstore makeup for ages there are definitely products that stick out in my mind as noteworthy. one such noteworthy drugstore makeup brand would be L'Oreal Paris HIP Studio Secrets. ah maze ing.

in the world of Grail or Fail? these were a definite Grail.  this shadow stick glides on smoothly and does not budge.  use it as an eyeshadow, a primer, a highlighter, or even a nude lipstick.  this will stay put.

MAC has a similar product and i own one from each brand.  while they each work well, i don't have a strong preference of one over the other.  in the land of drugstore makeup, you don't often find products that can hold their own against department store brands.

give it a shot.  you might be pleasantly surprised.

Fall Fashion

H&M.

i heart you.

went out to dinner this week with one of our fave couples and what does she show up wearing? this awesome top from H&M:

so chic right? and check out that jacket. $14.95?! how cute would this look paired with jeggings? (had to suggest it)

animal prints are spot on for fall and most of us have something or other hanging around our closets.  if you don't, consider parting with a ten spot to pick up one of these shirts.

military is back with a vengeance.  since this is a trend that seems to pop in and out of style, it is usually worth the investment.  somewhere in my closet i have a military jacket (that i purchase 8 years ago) that would suit this trend perfectly.  pair it with an animal print top and BOOYAH! (oh yeah, you better believe i just said booyah. haha)

take a second, go through your closet and see what you have. you may possibly have the perfect outfit just waiting to be found.

I'm on Facebook

happy Labor Day everyone.  Kellie and i did an awesome photoshoot this weekend and we worked with this epically (is that even a word?) cool guy Anthony.  we shot at several different locations and it was definitely inspiring.  while we were out we had a friend along (love ya Char) and we were brainstorming ideas about work.  the girls recommended i start a Facebook page.  friends of mine know that i have been resisting this (for no good reason...just being stubborn) and now i have joined the fun.

so if you'd like to be friends (which i would love) please send me an invite.  i'm still trying to figure out this newfangled technology and it may take me a while to find you.

Too Many Pashminas?

for this week's fashion friday we're going to do a little recycling.  it is all about taking something old and making it new, without spending $$$.

i was recently perusing the Top Shop web site (i like to get outfit ideas here, they seem to be on top of the latest trends) and i found SNOODS.  what is a snood? it is a scarf that acts as a scarf/hood/hair wrap.  they had so many snoods to choose from it was only a question of which fabric i liked best.

...and then i saw the price.  $30 for a snood? really!?

i know this little piece is adorable but i can't part with that many bones for something so simple.  this is where you get creative.  pashmina scarves have been around for years now and i'm sure all of you have a scarf or two in your closet.  i personally had three so i decided to do a little surgery.

Lay scarf flat and fold in half
Use fabric scissors to cut scarf in half
Take one half of the scarf and pin it's ends together
the next step is simple. sew :)

once you are complete enjoy your finished product.

wear it around your neck...
or as a hood. hence the name: SNOOD
i enjoy taking something old and making it new.  do you have any items you have done this with? if so, i would love to hear.

Chip Free Nail Polish

i don't usually recommend a product this highly but if you don't own it, you should!  Seche Vite top coat polish is THE BEST top coat i have ever used.  i think i may have recommended this product in a previous post but after having owned it for 3 months, i am completely obsessed.  i can paint my nails, have them dry within 5 minutes (not the usual 10-20 it takes for other products to become smudge free) and not have a chip for days.

from the website:

Seche Vite™ Dry Fast Top Coat is widely acknowledged as the world's finest top coat. Its patented formula penetrates through the nail lacquer to the base coat forming a single solid coating over the nail plate for a much more durable finish, guaranteed not to yellow and leaves nails silky, stronger and resistant to chipping and peeling.
Named Best Beauty Buy by InStyle

run, don't walk, to the nearest computer and order this off of Amazon. (it can be found for only $3.50).  since i use the swagbucks toolbar i have Amazon gift cards which would make this product free!

(Swagbucks is a search engine which gives you points for every search.  these points can be redeemed for giftcards, prizes, etc.  you automatically get 30 points just for joining.  i have been a member for 6 months and have already redeemed 3 gift cards simply by searching.  if you are interested you can check it out HERE)

Besties

you know you and a friend are becoming close when you begin to look like each other.

even though this fuzzy picture was taken with my phone the message is clear.  great minds think alike.  the bottom hand and foot are mine (notice my veiny hands? i have my dad to thank for that).  i'm so jealous, she actually has a nail on her pinky toe!

xo,
kristie

sorry, i just couldn't help myself.  i had to post it.
