Naked Eye by Shu Uemura {Eye Makeup Tutorial}

who needs the Naked Eye palette when you have Shu Uemura's Color Atelier? simply create your own Naked Eye palette from their wide range of colors. i am using the Shu Uemura Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown and Gold Shimmer.

this tutorial has a little more depth in its color than my typical step by step 1-2-3 eye makeup tutorials. however, adding the extra step gives your eye makeup a more professional look.

  1. apply Gold Shimmer to entire eyelid.
  2. using Dark Brown, concentrate color on the outer corner of the eyelid.
  3. blending Medium brown with Light brown, apply to the crease of your eyelid.
  4. finish by applying a second coat of Shimmer Gold to the center of the eyelid.

enjoy!

Wide Eyed, Sparkly Eyes {How-To}

achieving wide-eyed, sparkly eyes is simple. it requires some extra attention to your eyelashes. curling your lashes, and appropriately applying mascara, can make your eyes appear wider and brighter.

an eyelash curler is an essential tool in your makeup kit. there is no other eyelash curler i recommend more than the Shu Uemura eyelash curler (you can read my review here). curling your lashes doesn't hurt, and the results are immediate. if your eyelashes are anything like mine, which grow straight forward, it will literally "open" your eyes.

another essential tool in your makeup must-haves would be mascara. mascara adds definition to your lashes, making them fuller, longer, and darker. experiment with colors to determine what you prefer. i am a Blackest Black kind of girl, but perhaps you are a Dark Brown, or Navy.

for instruction on how to appropriately apply your mascara, you can check out my video here:

China Glaze Electropop Collection

China Glaze's new Electropop collection may possibly be my favorite collection yet! there isn't a single color in this collection that i wouldn't wear. each and every shade is perfectly chosen for the spring "brights" trend.

here's a close shot of my three personal favorites, Make Some Noise, Aquadelic, and Dance Baby:

my absolute favorite in the collection would have to be Aquadelic. a girlfriend of mine (you can check out her AMAZING blog here) had a color similar to this last spring, and i have been searching high and low to get my hands on this shade. while looking at Aquadelic, i realized why i might like it so much:

last, i wanted to share a swatch of Dance Baby, from my favorite "dance baby":

{Saturday Style} Mixing Prints

Once again another topic that seems to be a bit scary to try .. But once you see polka dots and stripes, or stripes and cheetah print paired together, you'll realize it is really quite easy :) Here are a few pointers:
  1. Blend small designs with large designs, example ... Bold thick stripes paired with a soft floral.
  2. Throw a "solid" on .. when wearing mixed prints try to wear a solid pant or cardigan to soften the look.
  3. Stick to a neutral shoe .. black, brown, tan, nude... you have enough going on with all the prints. Keeping it simple down below will keep your audience looking where you want them to look (without them giving the "what was she thinking when she left her house this morning?" look.)
REMEMBER there are ALWAYS exceptions to the "rules" and these three things are more like guidelines to help you begin the process of picking the right mixed print for you.

Here are few examples of mixed prints that I enjoy wearing!

kim

florals and stripes are ALWAYS friends! this is a pairing that NO ONE can go wrong with ! (notice the colored pant..:)..)
shirt-forever 21 ($12.95), cardigan-goodwill (vintage $5.99),belt-goodwill ($2.99), pant-H&M ($12.95)

again the cardigan softens the "look" by being the solid , but is not necessarily a MUST.
shirt-forever21 ($9.99), cardigan- H&M ($19.95), skirt-forever21($7.95), necklace-gift

oh cheetah print how i love thee. I saw this lovely duo on pinterest (i'm obsessed) and the next day, was working on this pairing. it somehow works right? shirt-forever21 ($19.95), skirt-nordstrom rack (old)

shirt-forever21(old),cardigan- H&M ($19.99), pants-forever21 ($9.95), shoes -marshalls (jessica simpson) ($39.99)

shirt-forever21 ($19.95), skirt-forever21 ($7.95), cardigan-H&M ($12.95)

casual look while mixing prints

Spornette Brush Review

this video here:

won me TEN brushes from Spornette. that's right, TEN (i have already managed to give away five).

if you would have asked me before using my new Spornette brushes, "does a good brush really matter?" i probably would've answered with "sure it helps, but it is non-essential". case and point, take a look at my old brushes:

so embarrassing, don't judge.
my paddle brush had these nice little "tips" that massaged my scalp when i brushed. i found out recently that those "tips" actually catch on hair, causing hair to break. for future reference, avoid any plastic tips on brushes.

my barrel brush had actually cracked at the top, due to overheating, and that crack always caught my hair. the barrel of the brush had been dented and the bottom casing was ill-fitted and would also catch hair.

guess what? a good brush IS essential. a good brush will add shine, protect hair, won't cause breakage, and will style like a champ. here are some of the brushes Spornette offers:

the wooden brushes are part of their "Italian" line and are made with boar bristles, proven to add shine and are extremely gentle on your hair.

the blue brush (Farenheit 464) is my personal favorite. it styles extremely well due to its metal barrel and boar bristles mixed with synthetic bristles. it has this cute little removeable orange pin that helps you section your hair while you blow dry. the barrel design doesn't "catch" hair, meaning less breakage. the best part, it is affordable.

Spornette brushes can be found at www.Spornette.com. be sure to visit to view their complete line of brushes and learn which brush works best for your styling needs.

let me say it one more time, i've learned my lesson and a good brush IS essential. if you have been putting off replacing your old brush, i would suggest giving Spornette a try.

Eye Makeup Tutorial {1-2-3}

one of my favorite "simple" eye makeup looks is a purple crease. i like purple because it tends to bring out the slight hue of green in my eyes, and it also manages to look good with everything. here is your easy eye makeup tutorial so that you can apply your eye makeup like a pro.

you will need a nude shadow for eyelid and a purple shadow for your crease. i used a very fluffy brush for this look. the fluffier your brush, the better diffused your shadow will be, making blending a cinch.

  1. apply nude shadow to entire eyelid
  2. beginning at the outer corner of eye (so that color impact is strongest) press purple shadow into your crease using windshield wiping motion
  3. follow with a highlighter to your browbone for contour

{DIY} Hand & Body Scrub

'tis the season for body scrub. yes, that's right. in a few short weeks we'll start breaking out that self tanner and nothing is more essential to a good "self tan" than exfoliation. exfoliating products can be a little pricy, but making your own body scrub is simple, easy, and effective.

for this body scrub you will need:

mix equal parts olive oil and brown sugar. add a dash of vanilla and you're done. the best part is that this body scrub will keep, so store it in an airtight container.

{Saturday Style} How to Wear Colored Denim

COLORED JEANS ........... my new obsession. We've been having some kind of heat wave here in Arizona so far this month. Which has put me in the mood for MORE COLOR! With spring right around the corner we are seeing color everywhere, especially in pants! Since these beauties have hit the racks i believe i have purchased.. don't judge.......8 different colors.. i have found them at many different stores, Target (19.99), H&M(12.95), Forever 21 (19.99), Zara (19.99), Nordstrom Rack (29.99). Whenever i wear one of my colored jeans it never fails that someone comments on them. Most of the time the comment is "i wish i can pulls those off" or "you have to be a size 4 or smaller to wear those". To both these comments and any other negative comment about wearing a colored pant i have an answer.. well 3 answers. Neutrals, prints, or a jacket. The answer to being "able " to wear a colored jean is to stick to your top being either neutral, a print, or throw on a jacket.. Lets start with the

Neutral .. sometimes the key to chic is simplicity, Which means if you decide to step out in those flaming yellow jeans, you want to opt for a neutral top. The easiest way to pull this look off is a white t or tank, with your fun jeans and a pair of wedges..

Prints.. ugh boy do i love me some animal prints.. one in particular.. CHEETAH..Picture this.. Cheetah top, colored jean , and nude shoe. Super fun, a little bold but perfect for spring!

Jacket... If you really what to make the colored jean look less edgy and more sophisticated try throwing on a structured jacket. Try to stick with a jacket that fits well (clean lines) and goes no lower then the bottom of your bum bum.. :) and be sure to wear any of these looks with confidence, nothing says HOT like confidence does!!:) Here are a few ideas of looks that might work for you!

Billionaire Boyfriend Perfume

Kate Walsh, the gorgeous redhead from Private Practice, has just introduced her new fragrance.
"Evocative of the finer things in life, I created Billionaire Boyfriend for women to experience a fantasy - one that involves a glamorous, new boyfriend, one that happens to be a billionaire. The scent immerses those who wear it in ultimate, unsurpassed luxury."
while i can't endorse the name (something about needing a "Billionaire" to make you happy just rubs me the wrong way) i can endorse the scent. this fragrance is beautiful. Kate worked with a renowned france house and perfumer to create this scent, and it shows. there are hints of jasmine, orchid, gardenia, as well as sandalwood and golden amber. i sprayed this on my wrist and neck and was breathing happy for the entire day. in fact, i have been wearing it daily.

released just this month, you can get your hands on Kate's Billionaire Boyfriend by heading to Sephora (www.sephora.com) or HSN (www.hsn.com).

i am always a fan of perfumes. there is something so attractive about smelling good. i know when i catch a hint of Tman's cologne, i swoon a tiny bit. while i haven't asked him if he feels the same way about me, i imagine there is a similar effect.

if you are not a perfume wearer, i would definitely suggest beginning. find a scent you love and WEAR IT (how many of you have bottles sitting unused?!) Billionaire Boyfriend is a good place to start.

Physicians Formula {Review/Giveaway}

i have always been a fan of Physicians Formula. i remember being a teen, shopping the cosmetic aisle in Fred Meyer, and looking at their products trying to decide if i should go for the blush, or the eyeshadow.

when Physicians Formula offered to send products for review, i was more than happy to oblige. here is what i came up with:

i went for a soft smoky eye (a la V.S. Angel) since it was my date with Tman for Valentine's Day. i used this Physicians Formula palette for the shadow:

i chose the Nude Eyes palette because it reminded me of the Naked palette by Urban Decay. i loved all the neutral options. while i am a fan of color, i think it is better suited for Girls Night Out. instead, i would recommend keeping it nude when you're with your man.

the product itself isn't my top ranked shadow, but it works with surprisingly little fall out. i was happy to see that i didn't have to re-do my under eye makeup after applying. the color payoff is where it takes a little work. achieving the color you see in the palette took a few layers.

what is nice about these products is that they come with shadow application suggestions. another bonus is that the palettes are designed with eye color in mind, eliminating the process of trying to decide whether that shadow will work with your blue/brown/hazel/green eyes.

best part is that i was sent eyeshadows, liners, and mascara to share with you!

FOUR winners will be chosen. if you would like to win a custom Physicians Formula package, here's how:
  • "Like" me on Facebook
  • then leave me a comment letting me know what eye color you have.

Valentine Ombre Nail

here's a Beauty Blog Backtrack i wrote recently. it seems i can't get enough of the nail tutorials these days. maybe it's because even as a mom, you can do trendy, creative designs without looking cra-cra?

for this tutorial you will need three shades of red:

the design is fairly simple. just apply polish to one third of nail, take second polish and apply to the next portion followed by third polish to the last third of nail. just make sure to do one nail at a time. if polish is wet it will "bleed" into the next color.

happy V-Day!

{Saturday Style} Introducing Kim

my sister has this hairstylist who she loves. this hairstylist has a love for fashion. i love to bring all these loves together and introduce you to Kim, who will be providing us with with some styling guest posts every Saturday

Hi…
I’m Kim

I'm a wife, mother of two, part time hairstylist, crafter, and I’m a big time SHOPPER! Kristie asked me to join her once a week to give my two cents about what’s new in the fashion world. I wanted to start this week off by talking about one of my least favorite words …organization . If you are anything like me, whenever I’m stressed or have a bad day I tend to hit the shops to cool down.. and manage to leave with a few bags full of things :/(hubs hates that) I don’t believe that I need to change my method of how I “cool down” but I have tried to take a different approach .. for the year 2011 (last year) I made a goal to become more organized throughout my home(I am still not even close to being as organized as I wish I was).. my closet was the last on my list.. as I began to “attack “ my closet I noticed I had A LOT of doubles of things … two mustard yellow tights, two pairs of light pink flats (different brands, but almost identical), two striped blue cardigans.. etc. I then knew that it was a MUST that I organize my closet to be able to see what I have.. and to help separate my wants from my needs when I do go out shopping… I began to think of how I could utilize the space that I have .. I am lucky (until we move in April) to have a HUGE closet.. actually it’s a bedroom:

My husband was fed up with there being NO room for his things in our closet, correction no room to even walk. So while I was at work one day, he knocked a large hole in the wall

to the bedroom next to the master closet and grabbed a few shelves from IKEA and whaalaa.. my closet. (I know I know he rocks!) but knowing that this dream of a closet won’t last forever I knew I needed to organize accordingly… while out garage selling one day I ran across a pots and pans holder (originally silver) for $7 so I bought it.. with a little spray paint and a hook for the ceiling from Home Depot, it now holds all my scarves . This helps me to be able to see what I have while I’m dressing for the day.. and I know what I have for when I’m out getting my “fix”(shopping) so I don’t double up.. Another thing I found to be helpful are these amazing little things:

I have found these all over the valley (Arizona) from garage sales to thrift shops.. for as little as 13 cents a piece! I have a SMALL obsession with tights (BECAUSE I HATE SHAVING MY LEGS) I lost track of what and how many I had so now I hang my tights… by color..i also use these hangers to hold all my skirts (organized by “style” pencil, short, long, vintage etc.) again this helps for dressing and for future shopping.. here are a couple other things I have to help keep me organized:

Hopefully I was able to inspire you to keep an open mind while you’re out and about, you never know what you can do the someone else’s “junk” ..

kim

thank you Kim for your great organizational tips! i can't wait to see what you have in store for us in the future.

if you want to connect with Kim, you can find her here on Facebook. on her wall she posts pictures of her OOTD (outfit of the day) and lists where she bought each item. i love these posts because her style is so unique and fun.
