Wake Up With Makeup {Video Tutorial}

there are mornings where the bags under my eyes are so large i could pack for a weekend getaway. blame it on lack of sleep, too much salt, or poor hydration. any way you frame it, it's not pretty.

i know i am not alone in this, you've all experienced it at some point or another. here are some tips on how to:
Wake Up With Makeup

  • use a brightening foundation. for this tutorial i used my Hello Flawless Brightening Makeup by Benefit. this will help give your skin a glow it may be lacking.
  • try an under eye "de-puffer". there are too many of these products to count (many of them highly priced) so a big thanks to Hard Candy for creating Eye'm Tired. a cost effective way to eliminate puffiness around your eyes.
  • conceal! makeup artists will even use a white eyeliner under the eyes if the under eye circle is particularly dark or puffy. i stick with my always trusty Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage. that concealer will cover anything.
  • avoid dark makeup. stick to light reflecting makeup in subtle tones. this will make eyes appear brighter. i used Hard Candy's That's How Eye Roll, one end is a cream stick and the other is a loose powder shadow. avoid any eyeliner on the bottom eyelid.

here's a quick video tutorial i created showing you how i use the above mentioned products.

Petite Box {Review}

a few days ago we received a package in the mail. after checking the shipping label i was excited to see that our petiteBox had arrived. i finally had a box whose contents were intended not only for me, but my daughters as well. we decided to have an impromptu photoshoot to show you what was included:

Gorgeous Georges and Sissy Boo are curious about the contents

GG and SB fight over petiteBox items, typical sisters :)

top left: SB showing us the cleansing towelettes safe enough for BOTH sets of cheeks. top right: GG making a run for it while wielding the WELEDA Skin Care products. bottom: GG holding her new cuddly snuggly and set of MAM pacifiers,  SB is holding tight to the Earth Friendly Baby bubble bath and MD Moms towelettes.
petiteBox is similar to glamBox, but instead of new makeup product and samples every month, you receive product and samples for mom & baby.

included in this box were:

  • MAM pacifiers
  • cuddly snuggly (GG ate the tag so i am a little unsure of the specific brand)
  • MD Moms towelettes
  • Earth Friendly Baby bubble bath
  • 3 WELEDA skin care deluxe samples

for $25 you can receive your own monthly shipment of the latest and greatest products for babies and moms. maybe you don't have an infant? petiteBox makes a great gift option for expecting moms. buy them one box or a year subscription, either way they are sure to love it.

my favorite thing about petiteBox was definitely the packaging (i'm a sucker for it). packed in a beautiful box tied with ribbon, items were carefully placed and stowed inside box, making it feel like a glamourous present.

for more information check out petiteBox here.

Makeup Giveaway

this week's giveaway is courtesy of Minerals Mate. i was excited when they contacted me to host a giveaway because i have been in the market for a makeup "palette" and this has everything i was looking for.

most mineral based products are messy due to lids that are meant to double as an application surface. the Minerals Mate allows you to pour your powder into a compartment and use it until empty, rather than pouring from container to lid to container every time you apply makeup. Minerals Mate was designed for mineral makeup application but also works well with creams and loose powders. lids for each "well" allow for portability which makes Minerals Mate a great option for traveling.

this is also a good solution for "Foiling" eyeshadow (you can check out my tutorial here). blending your shadow with liquid can be messy and possibly contaminate your original supply of makeup. your Minerals Mate makes blending easy.

my favorite thing about the Minerals Mate is that it is dishwasher safe. if you know me personally you know i put everything in the dishwasher. it is my own personal autoclave, i.e. sterilizer.

in case you don't have mineral or pigment makeup i have included two MAC pigments to get you started.
a gorgeous purple shade and a white shimmer, perfect for summer.

Hunger Games Eye Look {Guest Post}

a big thank you to Justina and Jessica of TBG {TruBeautyGems} for creating this makeup look involving the latest and greatest movie blockbuster. if you haven't heard of these TBG, i would recommend taking a minute to check out their blog. with product reviews, tutorials and videos, these ladies keep it real with honest and trustworthy advice.

{Guest Post}

The movie "Hunger Games" has been all the rage lately, and everyone has been going crazy over the Katniss braid.  There are so many other fun looks in this movie if you keep an eye on the Capitol fashions.  One of our favorite was the fun eyeliner look that Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) rocked.  He played Katniss's makeup artist in the movie.  We loved the sleek gold eye liner that he was wearing and decided to come up with our own spin on it!

Products used:
Stila eyeliner in koi
Lancome matte eyeliner in Pink Pearls
Eyelash curler
Black liner for bottom lashline (optional)

This was a super easy look to create.  I prefer to wear eyeshadow even if the color is nude on my lids, but you could forgo this step or use a concealer instead.  I simply added one thick line of my favorite gold shade, curled my lashes, and topped them off with a coat of mascara.  I like the extra definition that a little black liner on the bottom lashline gives me, but that step would be optional in creating this look.  I love how neutral, yet flashy this eye look is.

thanks for sharing Justina and Jessica!

Yellow Polka Dot Mani {Tutorial}

i am lucky enough to have an incredibly talented friend named Kiki (yes, that's her name and i love it) who comes up with the best designs and DIY's. this amazing woman has just created the cutest, funnest, and all-round inspiring lifestyle website called Kiki & Company. formerly known as Kiki Creates, she has taken her blog to new heights by infusing aspects of crafts, cooking, beauty and health to the site. just launching this week it has been a huge success, and will continue to grow.

if you'd like to find out more, you can also find her on Facebook where she shares great ideas from her blog, as well as other clever creatives.

being her friend is a pleasure but i also enjoy being a regular Fashion/Beauty contributor to her blog. here is a recent post i created for Kiki & Company:

polka dots, especially itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka dots, always make me think of sun. now that the sun has finally started shining again i thought it was time for a sunny mani.

i have been obsessed with polka dotting lately because the technique is so simple! just place a small dot of polish on some paper, dip your toothpick in, and get polka dotting. finishing with a top coat makes polish and polka dots smooth, so make sure you don't forget that step.

happy polka dotting!

The Denver Post Article

wow! a couple days ago i was interviewed by The Denver Post and the article was printed in todays newspaper, as well as posted on the The Denver Post blog. above is a short excerpt, but if you'd like to see more click here.

ps. i just have to share a quick thank you to Kellie Anderson for taking a great photo. that girl has skills.

Makeup Touch-up {How-To}

yesterday i posted about the Chicago Shopping event i recently attended. i had my nails done hair done everything did, fancy huh?

before walking the Red Carpet, Estee Lauder was there to give some makeup touch-ups so i thought i would share the key points when touching up your makeup.

  • remove shine. those of us with normal to oily skin tend to look a bit shiny by the end of the day so give your shine a quick once over with some powder, or blot shine away with some blotting paper.
  • freshen your glow. give your blush or bronzer a little more color as it tends to fade throughout the course of the day. same goes for your eyeshadow, reapply your highlight as it is typically the first color to lose it's lustre.
  • touch up your lips. technically there is such a thing as too much lipgloss, however i like to reapply like it is going out of style.

ps. don't forget, you can vote once DAILY for the Allure Beauty Blogger competition. so please head over and give me a vote. be sure to leave me a comment on the NYX giveaway, each vote is an entry.

Braided Up Do {Tutorial}

Tman and i just spent some time in the windy city and i have A LOT to share with you. i never considered Chicago the place for beauty lovers but believe me, i did more shopping, spa-ing, hairstyling and beautifying than i have in a long time. over the next week i'll be sharing my escapades with you.

our first stop: the Chicago Shopping event. the Chicago Shopping event was a beauty bloggers dream. i was able to have my makeup done, my hair done, and shopped all night. now that's a good time.

here's the up do created by my girl from Mario Tricoci Salon. she created an amazingly simple yet chic up do from a basic french braid. here's how it was done:
  1. begin by "dirtying" up the hair. apply some texturizer and do some light teasing all around the crown. the more texture and "roughness" to the hair, the easier it is to style, and stay styled.
  2. do a basic french braid.
  3. instead of finishing with a rubber band, twist end of braid back up into hair and pin in place with bobby pins.
  4. gentle pull pieces of the braid outwards to "muss" up the style. this makes the style look more intricate and complicated, rather than just braided.

don't forget to visit Allure's Beauty Blogger Awards. the first challenge is up and i could use your vote. remember, every vote is an entry from amazing rewards from Allure, as well as enters you into my weekly giveaway (just leave me a comment on the giveaway post).

Purpose Skin Care {Review}

i am a firm believer in the idea that if you take care of your skin, it will take care of you. meaning, no matter what your age, appropriately cleansing and moisturizing will provide you with long lasting results.

a few weeks ago Purpose send me some cleansing products to try. i have been on a fairly strict skin regimen between Mychelle and RoC, so using these cleansers and moisturizer had to be fit in between the two. here are some of the things i liked:

  • simplicity. i don't have a problem with using several creams and moisturizers, but there is something to be said about a basic cleanser and moisturizer. simple, easy, and effective.
  • sunscreen! with everything we know about UV damage we should be using a sunblock daily. having a moisturizer with a sunblock built in is worth every penny.
  • oil-free, fragrance free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. these are the four key factors when looking for any sort of skin care product. non-comedogenic means it won't clog your pores, hypoallergenic means your sensitive skin is protected, fragrance free and oil free are both excellent choices for those with sensitivities.
Purpose is a great option for those of you who like the simple basics of skincare. easy and effective. for more information or product purchase information, you can visit their website

ps. please take a minute and head over to Allure and vote for my weekly challenge. don't forget that every vote enters you into some great prizes from Allure, as well as, enters you into my weekly giveaway.

Sparkle Dipped Pedicure

last December i created a sparkled dipped mani for the holiday season. now that spring is here, how about a sparkle dipped pedi?

i'm one of those girls who likes to use sparkle on the regular when it comes to my pedi. i'm not a big fan of sparkle makeup, and sparkle-y fingernails are great for special occassions, but sparkle toes just make me happy.

to create the 'dipped' effect:
  • paint entire nail with base color
  • follow with a full coat of sparkle polish
  • apply second coat of sparkle polish beginning at the middle of the nail
  • apply third coat of sparkle only to the tip of nail

don't forget to visit Allure's Beauty Blogger Awards. the first challenge is up today and i could use your vote. remember, every vote is an entry from amazing rewards from Allure, as well as enters you into my weekly giveaway (just leave me a comment on the giveaway post).

DIY Manicure

here is a Beauty Blog Backtrack written a few months ago. since i have several new visitors, i thought i would share it again:

doing your own mani can not only save you money, but time as well. it isn't easy for me to find a spare 30-45 minutes where i can leave the house (sans children) just to keep up my polish. doing my own manicure is simple, easy, and inexpensive!
  1. gather your supplies. nothing is worse than having to look for your top coat with because you forgot to grab it before you polished your nails!
  2. remove any old polish. enough said.
  3. trim your nails. some people prefer longer nails, i cannot do long nails because cleaning = broken nails. if you are going to trim your nails, make sure you leave a small amount of white at the tips.
  4. file your nails. this helps to add shape and remove any sharp edges. when filing, be sure to avoid using a sawing motion as this will damage nails. gentle rock your file from one side to the other to achieve desired shape.
  5. soak your nails. fill a bowl with warm water and few drops of soap and proceed to soak for approximately five minutes. this will help soften your cuticles, remove any dust from filing, and clean your nail beds.
  6. push back cuticles. using a cuticle stick, popsicle stick, or anything you have that is worthy of the job, gently push back cuticles so that nail bed is clear.
  7. polish your nails. i am using my Poshe basecoat to ensure a smooth canvas, my China Glaze polish for beautiful color, and my Poshe topcoat for a shiny finish. love these products and my nails last for days without chipping. yay! finish with the Poshe cuticle cream to prevent hang nails and keep cuticles moisturized.
  8. enjoy your nails.
doing this once a month should keep your nails healthy and strong. this doesn't need to be done every time you polish, but it will help maintain nail quality.

Easy Everyday Hair {Tutorial}

i'm not really sure why my face is so serious in this photo because i love this hairstyle. i used to do it frequently, then it sort of fell out of the 'hairstyle rotation' until i saw it on Pinterest last weekend. hello, old friend:

so easy to achieve, looks undeniably adorable and takes merely seconds.
  1. begin with your hair down. i added a touch of of Enjoy Straightener when i blow dried this morning followed by some Enjoy Shine and Smooth.
  2. tease the hair on the crown of your head. i'm using my absolute favorite teaser: Spornette's Little Wonder
  3. pin back the sides of your hair using small clips or bobby pins.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

i am practically bursting out of my skin today to let you in on the BIGGEST secret i have been holding in for the last month. i have been selected to participate in Allure Magazine's Beauty Blogger of the Year contest!

yep, you read that right, Allure Magazine. i am competing against several talented, smart and beautiful women (and man), all savvy enough to win this, however i am hoping that you all will help me obtain that unbelievable title. (you can view my profile here, let me make the disclaimer that i do like tankinis, it is the monokini that i could do without)

there are stages of the competition (all of which i have already submitted) and each stage will be determined by public vote. this is where i need you! please take two minutes out of your day to head over and give me a vote. you can vote once every weekday, and just for voting you will be eligible for prizes.

winning this competition would mean an opportunity to be featured in Allure magazine, a trip to NY for fashion week, and be named Allure Beauty Blogger of the Year. just being selected to compete has been an honor, but to win would be a dream come true.

so pretty please, go vote.

St. Tropez Mitt Applicator

you all know how much i love St. Tropez self tanner, but guess what? their tanning mitt applicator has changed everything i know about self tanning. applying tanner has never been easier using this mitt. i snapped a picture of my feet to show you how even my application was in a notoriously difficult area to self tan (due to dry skin and callouses).

pretty amazing, right? now i will be preaching about the goodness of St. Tropez along with the applicator mitt. the two make an unbeatable duo.

Black & White Mani {tutorial}

here's a nail tutorial i created inspired by Ciara. her black and white mani made the pages of Glamour magazine and i couldn't help but try to recreate it. super simple and cute, it's quite easy:

gather your polish

paint nails white and with a toothpick, add black dots

told you it was easy. the clean look of the black and white looks suprisingly adorable with a colored denim or a bright blouse.

Spring Fashion {Beauty Blog Back Track}

here is a beauty blog backtrack i wrote for Kiki Creates. (love that girl).

spring is here and so is color! now is the time to ditch the grays and blacks of winter and introduce the pinks, greens, and blues of spring.

i put together a couple ensembles that you will probably see me prancing around in for the upcoming months. note that several items are from my personal favorite, Target. Target is the store for seasonal "trend" items that you are not interested in investing a lot of money on. every summer i stock up on their five dollar tees and grab a few cardigans for versatility. this year they have AMAZING colored denim, (colors identical to the ones at Nordstrom) for a great price. save your money and spend it on items that you will wear over & over, like a nice pair of sandals or a gorgeous set of earrings.

here are my picks for spring. if anything, i hope it will inspire you to add a few pops of color in your spring wardrobe.

Becca Beach Tint {Review}

since i have been raving about many different tints i thought it was about time i did a review!

i am a fan of Becca Cosmetics and i like them for their ability to create a 'natural' looking beauty. using their products isn't obvious or heavy. Becca Cosmetics create just the right amount of subtlety and color.

below i took a before and after shot using my Becca Beach Tint. at a glance, you can't see a dramatic change, but if you look closely you will see the apples of my cheek are a bit rosier and my naturally pale lips have a better defined outline as well as color.

this is a great shade if you are going to the pool, beach, or anywhere you don't want to look like you're wearing makeup (but still wearing makeup of course!). the color doesn't rub off and is long lasting making Becca Beach Tint a perfect solution. head to for purchasing information.

Topknot Tutorial {Hair How-To}

with spring officially here i have been wanting to share some updo's to help beat the (approaching) heat. this hairstyle can be a simple updo for prom, a chic everyday style or the perfect hairdo to show off your new gold earrings.

  1. begin with your hair down and brush smooth (i'm using Spornette's Hypnotique brush to create smoothness and shine)
  2. place hair in a high ponytail excluding the hair that frames your face. smooth any flyaways using Enjoy Thermal Spray.
  3. spritze hair a few times with Enjoy Texture Spray and use your fingers to tease ponytail to create volume.
  4. pin ponytail into a bun.
  5. pin back remaining loose hair.
